How Can Dr. Kubo Help You With Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is no fun but Dr. Kubo can diagnose and treat periodontal disease and help you maintain healthy teeth and gums. At Brian S Kubo, DDS Inc., a periodontal examination is given as a part of your regular checkup.
During the exam, a periodontal probe is gently used to measure the space between your teeth and gums. If the space is too large and bleeding occurs, you may have a periodontal disease such as Gingivitis or Periodontitis.
What Is Periodontal Disease?
Gingivitis is the precursor to gum disease and is reversible. Plaque irritates the gums, causing them to weaken and bleed.
Periodontitis is a more advanced stage of gum disease in which the plaque hardens to form tartar and deeper pockets between the teeth and gums form, causing more severe irritation, inflammation, and bleeding. If periodontitis is untreated and advances, bone loss may occur.
Treating periodontal disease will depend on the type and severity of the disease. If your disease is caught in the early stages of gingivitis, one or two regular cleanings will be recommended. However, if the disease has advanced, a deep cleaning method known as scaling and root planning will be recommended.
Regular brushing is very important. It only takes 24 hours for the plaque on your teeth to become tartar. Once your treatment for periodontal disease is complete, you will have regular maintenance cleanings about four times per year.
These cleanings will ensure the pockets between your teeth and gums are a healthy size and you are limiting plaque and tartar buildup.
